Star of the Sea: Marian Sacred Songs of the Mediterranean”
With:
Anne Azema, voice and hurdy-gurdy
Susanne Ansorg, vielle, gittern and lute
This concert features Occitan, Spanish and Italian music of the Middle Ages.
In the 12th and 13th centuries the cult of Mary was in full bloom in France, as with much of Europe. The Virgin Mary is all the more revered and popular because she represents a direct link between humanity and God. This concert, solo voice with instrumental accompaniment, presents great songs, narratives, spiritual songs and dance from different regions of the north shore of the Mediterranean basin. Each of its kind and its language (Old Occitan, Galician, Italian) carries the hopes, prayers, desires and complaints to she who, “star of the sea,” “gate of heaven ,” “dawn,” serves as a mediator, ambassador and guide.

CAMERATA MEDITERRANEA EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS
In the autumn of 2008, Camerata Mediterranea, directed by Joel Cohen, launched its program of musical offerings and encounters.
Schools, universities, religious groups, and other associations can choose from a menu of live events, featuring lecture-discussions, accompanied by musical performances, around the themes of shared musical roots and cultural exchange in the Mediterranean world.
Examples of Available Topics:
*The Three Religions and their music in Medieval Spain
*What is Andalusian in Arabo-Andalusian music?
*The Virgin Mary in medieval Spanish song
*The roots of Sephardic music
Each of these topics can be adapted to the needs and interests of specific audiences: student or adult, music lover or general public, religious or secular.
The format will be relaxed and informal, leaving space for audience questions and participation.
The intent of these events is to inform and educate, but also to entertain with compelling and beautiful musical examples in live performance.
Size of participating ensemble:
One to four, depending on subject and calendar
Length of presentation:
Approximately one hour. Longer sessions, including intensive study and teaching/coaching sessions, are possible.
Fees:
Negotiable, thanks to Camerata Mediterranea's generous donors.
